Great White Egret

Great White Egret - Catalunya
The Great White Egret is a large bird with all white plumage. Apart from size, the Great White Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet although the bill may become darker and the lower legs lighter in the breeding season. In breeding plumage, delicate ornamental feathers are borne on the back. It has a slow flight with its neck retracted.

The Great White Egret is distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world favouring all kinds of wetland habitats and it is a familiar species in southern Europe.

Expanding populations in Europe mean that the Great White Egret is now seen more frequently in the UK and it can turn up in almost any part of the country with the majority of records in south east England and East Anglia.
