Vartius to Suomussalmi, Kainuu, Finland
Kainuu region borders the regions of Pohjois-Pohjanmaa (Northern Ostrobothnia) to the north and Pohjois-Karjala (North Karelia) and Pohjois-Savo (Northern Savonia) to the south. In the east it also borders Russia.
The landscape of Kainuu region consists of lakes, hills and vast uninhabited forest areas. Boreal forest makes up most of the region and consists of birches, pines and spruces.
