Sparrowhawk

Sparrowhawk - Birds of prey
The Sparrowhawk is a small bird of prey that is adapted for hunting birds up to pigeon size in confined spaces like dense woodland. The adult male has a bluish-grey back and wings and orangey-brown bars on the chest and belly. The female and young birds have a brown back and wings and brown bars on the chest and belly. The Sparrowhawk has bright yellow or orangey eyes, long yellow legs and long talons. Females are larger than males as with most birds of prey.

The Sparrowhawk can be seen at any time of year throughout the UK except for parts of the Scottish Highlands, the Western Isles and Shetland. It can be found in woodland and open country but it also visits gardens in towns and cities and in rural areas.
