The Põõsaspea peninsula juts out in to the Gulf of Finland and is the most north westerly point of mainland Estonia. Prior to Estonia gaining independence in 1992, this area had very restricted access since it was part of the border zone of the former Soviet Union.

The Põõsaspea peninsula is a migration hotspot both in spring and autumn and in winter the sea holds huge numbers of wildfowl.
