Lahemaa National Park was established in 1971 and was the first area to be designated as a National Park of the former Soviet Union. It is located about 40 miles east of Tallinn with the Gulf of Finland to the north and the Tallinn to Narva road to the south. It covers an area of 280 square miles including almost 100 square miles of sea and it is the largest National Park in Estonia. Forest covers around 70% of the Lahemaa National Park and much of the remainder includes raised bogs. The area is rich in flora and fauna including a population of Wolves, Brown Bears and Lynx.
