Saaremaa is the 4th largest island in the Baltic Sea and largest island in Estonia, measuring over 1000 square miles. It is located in the Baltic Sea, south of the island of Hiiumaa, and it is included within the the West Estonian Archipelago Biosphere Reserve. The island lies on a major migration flyway between Europe and the Arctic and huge numbers of birds appear in spring and autumn. The Sõrve peninsula is situated at the southern tip of Saaremaa and is a well known seawatching and migration hotspot and the site of a bird observatory.
